NEW: Stephen Miller’s Anti-Family Policies Making a Comeback in Homeland Security

Today, news broke that while Americans confront the COVID-19 pandemic, immigration officials are exploring avenues of keeping children in Border Patrol custody and away from shelters meant for children or being released to family members.

Families Belong Together chair Jess Morales-Rocketto released the following statement in response:

“Every American knows one thing about this pandemic: we are better off when we can shelter in place with our loved ones. While our communities focus on staying safe, the Trump administration has used this as an opportunity to quietly instill anti-immigrant political sentiment into the office of Health and Human Services, jailing children for longer periods to punish families for seeking safety in the U.S. The office of Health and Human Services is responsible for the safety of thousands of children. It is unacceptable to use this crisis as a cover to secretly keep more families apart.”

The Families Belong Together coalition includes nearly 250 different groups comprising tens of thousands of Americans from all backgrounds who have joined together to fight the Trump Administration’s cruel family separation and anti-immigrant agenda. Led by the National Domestic Workers Alliance, MoveOn, the ACLU, FWD.us and The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Families Belong Together coalition organized the National Day of Action that saw hundreds of thousands of people protest the family separation policy and other inhumane immigration policies at more than 780 events in all 50 states. The coalition is at the forefront of the fight to permanently end family separation and incarceration, immediately reunite all families who remain torn apart, reverse the Trump administration’s zero-humanity policy that created this crisis, and hold accountable anyone who has profited politically or financially from the suffering of these families.
